The year was 1982. That’s the year Smart Little Lena won the Futurity, “E.T.” was the movie to watch and in cutting circles, if you wanted a laugh, “Cuttin’ Capers” was the book to read.

The introduction to that little 142-page book states,

It all started quite innocently. One person and then another would entertain a group of us at horse shows with hysterical tales of days gone by. We held our sides, wiped tears from our eyes and thoroughly enjoyed laughing at those antics, some innocent and some mischievously planned. We forgot about the electricity bill that needed paying, the installment notes coming due and the rising cost of living. Instead, we laughed.

Then someone would adamantly say, “These stories need to be recorded!” Time and again similar statements were made and that year, the same year “E.T.” kept the movie houses full and Smart Little Lena filled the coliseum, the little paperback book called “Cuttin’ Capers” was born.

What fun it was to write! Needless to day, it didn’t take long before they were sold out.

History, though is a keeper, and even now, almost 20 years later I receive requests for “Cuttin’ Capers”.

A great heavy harness leather rein, 6 1/2 to 7 feet long. These reins are perfect for riding colts in a sidepull or horses in a sliding gag. Also great on German martingales or any rig that you are going to have the horse gathered up. This tight fibered harness leather will take some time to break in, but will last for years of hard use.

Double off latigo is 1 3/4 inches wide x 4 1/2 feet long. It is made just the right thickness to be very strong but not leave a lump under your fender.

Hand-braided 4-plait noseband made of 3/16 inch twisted nylon rope. This hackamore gives the strongest signal of all the hackamores sold at DM Tack and is not recommended for training colts. Available with flat nylon hackamore reins.

This long latigo measures 6 1/2 feet x 1 3/4 inches. Made from firm, tight-fibered burgundy latigo leather that has been edged, hand-rubbed, and waxed. This long latigo is made to go around the cinch and saddle dee twice. These have a great feel and will give years of service.

The carefully crafted buckles are made from round stainless steel rod with washers to hold the tongue straight. These buckles are sized right to prevent galling and pull straight. Cincha will not curl or stretch and will last for years. These come with a nylon web center strap with 1-inch stainless steel dees and a nylon web keeper for the double off tails on the right side. The roper cinchas are wide through the center to spread the pressure from the pull over the belly. Cinchas are available for any sized horse (see drop down for lengths available).

Hackamore noseband is made of single nylon rope. Available in 3/8 inch or 1/4 inch noseband for more feel (see dropdown). Dennis recommends the 3/8 inch hackamore to start your colts in. Hackamore comes with flat nylon reins.

Soft 4-plait noseband made of tan 5/16 inch nylon solid braid rope. The 4 plait has slightly more feel than the 3 plait but is still very soft on the horse’s nose. This hackamore is perfect for loping. Comes with round nylon hackamore reins.

This X rein is a slightly lighter weight rein than the other harness leather reins sold by Dennis Moreland. This is still a very good firm set of reins just made from a lighter hide than the XX, XXX or XXXX. These reins average 7 to 7 1/2 feet in length and are hand edged, hand rubbed, oiled and hand rubbed again for a great feel before they are shipped to you.

This is Dennis Moreland’s  biggest selling rein.These reins are hand made from heavy harness leather and are 7 to 7 1/2 feet long. These are short enough to ride our little cutters with and heavy enough to show in.

The Oak leaf is a lifetime of traditional beauty in western tack. Made of Oak wood, this oak leaf inlay is accented with lasered leaf veins and acorns. Then inlaid into Walnut stirrups, the Oak leaf stretches from above the brass nut almost to the tread.

Remember, any inlay is available in any Premier Stirrup and can be garnished with stripers and even initials inserted in the middle of the Oak leaf. Click on the picture to see an example of the 3 inch Petite style.
